Broadway Diner, 218 East Broadway
Stephen Bybee
Columbia, MO
2000
I have been photographing downtown Columbia at night since 1997. During that time, I have not made very many photographs of Columbia’s interiors at night, for various reasons. This image was taken on black and white film in November or December of 2000, after a gallery opening downtown. The Broadway Diner was still located on Broadway, near the Providence intersection. Other commercial residents of this corner included Streetside Records, Osco Drug, Office Depot, and a service station and garage. This image of the Diner interior was taken around 11 p.m. on a Friday night, just as the Diner was starting to get lively. Within a couple years after this photograph was made, the Broadway Diner had moved to the other side of Broadway, Osco Drug was closed, and Streetside Records had moved to a new location on Providence.
