Peking

Columbia, MO

This photograph is the image that I want to say the most about, and it has become the most challenging to write about.  The Peking neon sign was a beacon and a waymarker on my nocturnal wanderings in downtown Columbia.  The illumination provided by this beautiful sign guided my steps on Ninth Street and provided many of my early photographs with a distinctive visual emblem.   My memories of the Peking neon sign that once broadcast its light along this stretch of South Ninth Street are that of a lightning-colored rune, a glowing, elevated cairn emblazoned by noble gases and guiding the footsteps of Columbians along this familiar stretch of street and sidewalk, its warm pink light mingling gracefully with the branches of the tree that stood outside the restaurant.  Of the 15 images I have brought to you each morning here since November 1st, this is the view of Columbia that I miss the most.
