Teller’s on a Snowy Night, Ninth and Broadway

There was a time in my life when nights at Teller’s were a weekly institution. If you have followed the posts I make each Friday morning, you might have heard me wax poetic about the beauty and snowy intensity of the winter of 2011. It was a seemingly endless winter of snowy nights and snow-covered streets, and it was a wonderful opportunity to photograph Columbia’s downtown. The only problem with photographing Columbia during a snowstorm is that it tends to make one very cold, and what better retreat than the warm and atmospheric confines of Teller’s? A recent article explains that Teller’s is housed in downtown Columbia’s oldest building, dating back to the 1860s. Previous tenants of this building have included a dry goods company, Columbia’s U.S. post office, and a clothier. Teller’s, here since 1998, is a restaurant, bar and art gallery, and I was fortunate to be able to exhibit my photography here in 2000 and again in 2012. This photograph, looking out through the front window onto Broadway, was taken in January, 2011 during one of the many snowstorms that swept through Columbia during that memorable winter.
